Arriving...

Officially day 3 "in country" ...although i'm pretty sure I missed all of Tuesday. Darn that International Date Line!

First of all, i probably should correct myself : Hai means yes. and Kannichiwa is spelled Konnichiwa.

The 12 hour flight was, overall, not so horrific. I had my trader joe's snackies, a good book and my Ted hose...no problems here. We eached watched 3 movies a piece -- that Kung Fu Panda is so funny! -- read our books and napped. My sponsor Ron (also my boss) was there to greet us after a fairly breezy trip through customs. Not bad.

We walked into a wall of humidity. Had to be reminded of what that felt like...oh yeah, just like Jacksonvile. Except they have a breeze here.

the drive back from the airport took about an hour and a half. Yokosuka is only about 40 miles from Tokyo but travel time around here seems to be double the mileage as a general rule.  The area is green and lush, although along the bay there is a lot of industry (as you might expect in a port city). Nothing super exciting or "cultural" to see on the freeway...except thtat we were on the wrong side of the road!

We crashed by 9ish that first night...and we awoke promptly at 0430 the next morning...well, i was also tempted to be awake at 0100, 0200, 0300...the sun is up EARLY here so by 0600 it was like high noon...

Spent the day checking in at the hospital...they seem to have everything nicely organized here (since they can't really spread out much). I have nice co-workers and people do seem pretty darn pleased to be here. We like that.

We spent today walking EVERYWHERE...checking out job opportunities for Justin, buying tickets to see Sumo wrestling, setting up accounts, exploring nooks and crannies of the base. We are also learning about housing options -- we're going to venture off base tomorrow and acquire cell phones and maybe do some house hunting. It sounds like there will also be base housing available but whether or not we take it we just don't know yet.

I'll write again after our adventures tomorrow...it's crash time -- 8:30pm...why wasn't i going to bed this early in the States?
